Time for a Rethink...........

I said yesterday about painting up a new army for this year's "Bring Out Your Lead", the Oldhammerer meet up in Nottingham in the summer, and I had the idea to finally paint up the 3rd edition Dwarf Army I've been promising myself since I was twelve. Sadly a realisation dawned on me, the latest GW Armies book is Dwarves which means Ebay prices on Dwarf stuff will be at a premium for the next few months - D'OH!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, time for a rethink. One if my reasons for liking Skaven is that I very rarely see other Skaven armies, they're relatively rare. So, ideally, I'd like another rare army but not so rare as to cost a humongous fortune. That rules out Orcs & Goblins and any form of Chaos on the popularity front and Slann on the cost front. The aforementioned Dwarfs can be discounted at present for both reasons.

This pretty much leaves the three flavours of Elves, both of the Human nations and Undead. I already own a sizeable Undead army but I can't decide if that excludes them or pushes them to the front of the queue.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Anyone want to offer some sagely advice?

  1. It depends if you have any dwarves already. I'd suggest an empire army with dwarf allies. Depends what kind of figures you're after really, are you going old school? In which case I'm not sure what would be your best option. If you wanted to Bretonnian I've a unit of halberdiers and a unit of spearman that I'm looking to sell along with a load of front rank figs to add variation. I might even have a unit of grail knights that I might not use. Brets with dwarves?

    1. I want to go proper old school so whilst I may take you up on the sale offer I'm looking at using 3rd edition mini's and prior. I hjave a 5th edition Bretonnian army to get painted up so what you're on about would fit in for them.

I think I'll be taking my Ratsies to the summer meet anyhow as Rats is kind of who I am (this blog is dedicated to them afterall) but I was considering doing a 1000pt force for 3rd of summat else. I have a few Old School Dwarfs and a fair few of the Marauder Dark Elves that I love so much, that's probably where I'm headed at present.

One idea I did have was for a doubles game. Four gamers, two each side, with about 1000pts each but using the Allies or Mercenary lists only. That would open up other possibilities such as Norse and Hobgoblins.

There will be people reading this screaming "You don't HAVE to use the Armies book", some even insisting you shouldn't use it but I adore the book. At 10 or so years old it was Warhammer armies filled with the artwork that made me fall in love with the hobby so whilst I accept you don't have to use it I love doing so.

I dunno, it's something I need to think about but I really need to decide soon to give myself time to hunt down the mini's for the right price and get them painted in time.

    2. Well if you do the doubles thing count me in for Hobgoblins/Half orcs. I need a push to start painting them.

    4. Almost definately. I think I've already negotiated a pass but I'll double check and make sure it's on the calendar.

  2. Don't worry - GW won't be releasing a slann book any time soon, so the ebay rates should be fairly reasonable ;)

  4. I was wondering why the last few dwarf auctions I watched went for such daft prices. Should have realised... :(

If it wasn't for your WA caveat I'd say Norse or Nippon, properly old school and readily available figures. With that caveat I dunno, wood elves seem the least commonly played which surprises me as they seemed popular back in the day.

    1. Also expensive if you want anything other than Skarlocs though.

If using mercenary lists Nippon and Norse is on the cards. I don't even have any Nippon myself.

    2. I'm thinking maybe Norse as they'd be usable in my modern Chaos army as Marauders

  5. How about using the Wargames Foundry ex-citadel range and make one of these Norse/Nippon/Bret/Empire armys. Either that or Dark Eles are cheap to collect. Just finished my 2000 points with a budget of £100

  6. Yeah, that was my thinking with the Norse, will have an investigation tonight
